The Outermost Edges of the Milky Way Halo from Galaxy Kinematics

چکیده
We measure for the first time outermost edges of Milky Way (MW) halo in terms depletion and turnaround radii. The inner radius, rid, identified at location maximum infall velocity, separates a growing from draining environment, while rta, marks edge infalling material toward halo, both which are located well outside virial radius. Using motions nearby dwarf galaxies within 3 Mpc, we obtain marginal detection zone around MW with velocity . This enables us to rid = 559 ± 107 kpc rta 839 121 kpc. measured radius is about 1.5 times (R200m) internal dynamics. Compared halos cosmological simulation Illustris TNG100, factor consistent that similar masses dynamical environments but slightly smaller than typical values Local Group analogs, potentially indicating unique evolution history MW. These measurements directly quantify ongoing outer provide constraints on current state independent

Galaxy Formation: Clues from the Milky Way
Stellar Populations are the fossil record of Galactic evolution. Interpretation of this record in the Local Group allows one to determine reliably the dominant physics controlling the evolution of those galaxies which are typical of the luminosity in the Universe, and is an essential prerequisite to understanding necessarily limited data at high redshifts. In our Galaxy, the key issues are the ...
متن کاملThe Shape of the Milky Way Halo
The latest Sloan Digital Sky Survey data tracing the tidal stream from the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal (dSph) reveals a bifurcation in the distribution of debris. The branching is caused by the projection of the old trailing and young leading tidal arms of the Sagittarius dSph. The angular difference between the branches is a measure of the precession of the orbital plane and hence the aspheri...
متن کاملStar Streams in the Milky Way Halo
The last 10-20 years has seen a profound shift in views of how the Galaxy’s halo formed. The idea of a monolithic early collapse of a single system (Eggen, Lynden-Bell and Sandage 1962) has been challenged by observations at high redshift and by cosmological models of structure formation. These findings imply that we should see clear evidence of hierarchical formation processes in nearby galaxi...
متن کاملChemodynamical Simulations of the Milky Way Galaxy
We present chemodynamical simulations of a Milky Way-type galaxy using a selfconsistent hydrodynamical code that includes supernova feedback and chemical enrichment, and predict the spatial distribution of elements from Oxygen to Zinc. In the simulated galaxy, the kinematical and chemical properties of the bulge, disk, and halo are consistent with the observations. The bulge formed from the ass...
متن کاملGALAXY HALO MASSES FROM INTERNAL KINEMATICS Romanowsky
The halo masses of nearby individual elliptical galaxies can be estimated by using the kinematics of their stars, planetary neb-ulae, and globular clusters—ideally in combination. With currently improving coverage of galaxies of ordinary luminosities and morphologies , systematic trends may be identified. Bright, boxy ellipticals show strong signatures of dark matter, while faint, disky ones ty...
